Celebrate with me! A FREE SUBSTANTIAL EDIT CONTEST!

I just have to share a blog post written by an editing client of mine, Hope Collier.

It's all about how she found this awesomesauce freelance editor (toot toot, ME!) via Mandy Hubbard and how that editor not only helped her fix her book, but taught her stuff she can use while writing future books too.

I seriously teared up reading it.

I feel useful and loved :)

Thanks, Hope!

xoxo!

And so, to celebrate the glowing review and for reaching 100 blog followers and 700 twitter followers (that just blows my mind!) I'm giving away a FREE substantial edit! (That's plot, pacing, character development, etc, up to 100k words) to one lucky reader!

+1 for becoming a new follower of the blog
+3 for being a current follower of the blog
+1 for becoming a new follower of my twitter
+3 for being a current follower of my twitter
+2 for tweeting about the contest (once per day, include links to actual tweet in your comment)
+5 for blogging about the contest (once per day, include links to actual blog post in your comment)
+1 for asking a question about writing/editing, or something else I can blog about that I haven't covered already (as many as you can think of!)

All you have to do is leave a comment with your total number of entries!

If you'll be RTing/blogging everyday, add a new comment every couple of days or once at the end and say that you're adding it to your tally (include running tally).  Just don't forget and miss out!

To get a link for a specific twitter update: on the twitter website, click on the time stamp below the update and it will give you a page with just the one tweet. Copy that web address and include it.

Make sure the link is to a SINGLE post/tweet or it won't count!

Contest is open worldwide (but has to be in English) as everything is done by email, and ends Friday July 2nd at Midnight. I can wait up to a month for you to finish your MS if it isn't finished by July 2nd, SO GET WRITING!

Thanks to @TinaLynn_ for the giveaway suggestion!

Okay, I'm an established Twitter follower, a new blog follower, and I retweeted your tweet.

I think that gives me 6 entries.

Kat Zhang | 23 June 2010 17:47

Congratulations, Cassandra! That's wonderful :)

Nate | 23 June 2010 17:48

Ooh! Ooh! I get to comment first! (maybe)

My project's not yet ready for your awesomesauceness, but I'm sure as heck interested in availing myself of it when it is.

And I'm so glad you feel useful and loved (again), although I don't understand how someone like you can still thirst for validation in that regard. You really are a writer's angel!

Katharine | 23 June 2010 17:49

Cassandra!

I would LOVE to win this prize!
I'm getting 12 points so far . ..
My tally:

+2 for tweeting about the contest (once per day)
+5 for blogging about the contest (once per day)
+1 for asking a question about writing/editing, or something else I can blog about that I haven't covered already (as many as you can think of!)

My writing/editing question is this: Do I have what it takes to make it big? No pressure or anything . . . ; )

Can't wait!

So...6 so far! Will be blogging/tweeting/asking questions many times over the next few days!

Thank you so much for holding such a great contest! Also, Hope's blog post was such a nice read. You sound awesome. :)

badgerpendous | 23 June 2010 17:59

Put me down for 6 (twitter and blog).

Question (so maybe 7): Is it a waste of time to make a fancy cover for your book prior to getting an agent/etc.?

That's 14 for me when you add my question:

Do you approach editing a manuscript from a different angle/mindset depending on the genre? Are there different "rules", essentially?

Of COURSE I will enter, contest addict that I am. Here's my tally (so far):

New blog follower - 1
Current twitter follower - 3
Retweet - 2
Question - 1

Total 7

And here's my question. When do you know you're DONE, really DONE, with revising a novel? Sometimes I feel like I revise to death. (You CAN say, "you just know" and I'll accept it, but I'm hoping for more)!

Thanks!

Altogether, 12 for me so far! :)

+1 for this question: At what point in a writer's journey do you think it pays to start paying? I have paid for workshops and an MFA program and I am debating paying for a professional editor to do a serious edit with me of my manuscript. What do you think that editorial help is worth?

coffeelvnmom | 23 June 2010 23:19

First off, congrats at such great things being said about you. Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn once in a while! =)

Second, here's my tally...

+1 new twitter follower
+3 current blog follower
+2 tweeted about the contest

That's 5 so far.:)

I'll be blogging about it tomorrow!

Claire | 24 June 2010 10:09

Hi Cassandra! Just updating my tally. Won't do this every day, but had a query question...does that fall in the writing/editing category?

+2 for tweeting about the contest (http://twitter.com/clairelegrand)
+1 for a writing/editing question

Question: Is it okay to compare your work to others' in your query? Like the old "it's like ______ meets _______" or "would appeal to fans of _____"? Sometimes I really want to do this, but then I think, shouldn't I be able to describe my book on purely its own terms? Anyway, is that a turn-off when reading slush, or helpful?

Thanks! That's 15 so far for me!

Susan Fields | 24 June 2010 13:35

What an amazing giveaway! Thanks so much for offering this.

+1 - new follower
Sorry, I'm not on Twitter yet - but I'm working up to it. :)

I'd love to blog about this but I'm on a hiatus right now. I'll add it to my sidebar though. My blog is http://susanfieldswriter.blogspot.com. I don't know if that counts for any points, so I'll leave it off my total.

+1 - Question: When an inanimate object is something of great importance (i.e. the Sorcerer's Stone in Harry Potter), and it's capitalized, would it also be capitalized when used with a person's name or pronoun (i.e. Harry's Stone, his Stone)?

Andrea Brokaw | 24 June 2010 14:40

Okay...

+3 for being a Twitter follower forever.

+1 for clicking the follow button, though I point out you've been on my RSS reader for ages...

+2 for tweeting "Hey! The lovely @CA_Marshall is giving away editing services for one lucky writer. Check it out: http://bit.ly/c8qM6D"

And maybe +1 for asking... Why is it so important to click the follower button? Because a lot of people seem to _really_ care about it but I don't quite understand why since the follower number doesn't correspond to the number of people actually reading a blog. And is there any reason I should care as a reader other than being nice to bloggers who care seeing as I'm perfectly happy reading blogs through Google Reader?

So 6 or 7... =)

I'm a current follower of your blog, I have been following you on Twitter for a while, and I tweeted the link today.

Question: which style manual is used by the majority of fiction editors? Non-fiction? You'll need to answer on the blog because I don't subscribe to contest comments as my email never stops dinging if I do.

+1 for asking a question about writing/editing, or something else I can blog about that I haven't covered already (as many as you can think of!)
My question for you: When attending a writer's conference, what would the advantages be of meeting with an editor - if you don't have an agent yet? I will be attending my first conference at the end of July, and they have me set up to meet with an editor, in addition to several agents. Since I currently don't have an agent yet (fingers and everything else crossed on this!), should I just pick his brain about the editing world, or is there actually a chance to pitch? So confused. :S
Total: +5

Good luck with your editing and writing!

Another twitter post today. I've been following your blog and twitter page since I found it. Hasn't been long enough to get the 3 points as a current follower? IF so, that brings me to: 8 points for today.

I had 6 points last time I visited. So, I have a total of 14 points?

Let me add one more point.

As a new follower, I don't know if you've addressed this yet, but...how do you know when your beginning is close enough to the meat of the story and when it starts too far from the meat? How do you lose your writer's blindness enough to know?

Eisley Jacobs | 25 June 2010 22:02

I wonder if I am entered yet...
I do follow the blog...
I do follow you on twitter...
I do have a link and a review on my site... and this was before the contest...

That should be worth like 40 points. #justsayin ;)

Oh and as soon as I find the tweet again... I will tweet it a lot. ;) Well without being a totally spammer...

Hi Cassandra!
I'm loving this contest as are so many other people. :) I posted on my blog this morning. http://www.sarahdarlington.com/2010/06/editing-contest.html

But I'm not going to enter because I seriously don't think I'll be finished in the time period. Hope everything is going well! And thanks again for the cool contest.

Stina Lindenblatt | 26 June 2010 07:40

Great contest!!!!

+ 3 for being a current follower of blog
+ 3 for being a current follower on Twitter
+ 1 for asking a question

If you've registered for a professional crit at a conference of your first 15 pages, but have made substantial edits since then (because beta readers found more to comment on than your writing instructor *groans*), what should you do? Do you tell the individual or just suck it up and be satisfied you've already made those changes? Can you ask other questions you might be wondering? (That's all one question).

I was one of the lucky winners on Angela Ackerman's blog (I just sent her my ms), so I might not need the prize (or maybe I do). If I win, could I pass it onto Angela? :) (You know, just in case the blogging contest gods grant me yet another prize).

huh. I commented last night, but I guess it didn't take.

Lets say 7 entries.

6 for being two kinds of awesome (following, I mean. I guess those terms aren't interchangeable), and one for this:

When do you know "writing advice" is meaningful and not just parroting everything you've heard/read somewhere?

I could give my own lectures by now, convinced of the soundness of my sources, but part of me feels the advising is illegitimate since the guidelines are famously disregarded. I can feel discredited before I can even get a chance to cite my sources.

1 - For asking a question.

My question: I read an article about how, basically we shouldn't worry ourselves to death about grammar, spelling, and punctuation. What's your take on it? Article link: http://tinyurl.com/Why-I-Don-t-Care-About-Grammar

So that is a total of 14 for me.

Congratulations!
My writing question: when you have a character that people will probably expect to die in a very cliche` and dramatic way in the end, how do you deal? Meaning, if you have one of those awesome-heroic-brave side characters in an action novel, and it would be a cliche` to kill him off in the end, what do you do? It's not just cliche` and climactic, it...fits.

+1 for new follower on blog (thought I already was, whatever...)
+3 for old follower on twitter
+5 for blogging about contest
+2 for tweeting about contest

total: +11

C Scott Morris | 28 June 2010 16:22

How exciting!
I've been following you on Twitter for a while now, and enjoy your adventures digging your way through the query/slush pile.
I count 7 entries so far for me!
+1 for becoming a new follower of the blog
+3 for being a current follow on twitter
+2 for tweeting about the contest
+1 for asking a question about writing. I don't know if you've covered it or not, but here is my question: Will you explain for us what you look for in Active Voice/Passive Voice. My agent recently gave me many wonderful suggestions to improve my manuscript, and she suggested I pay more attention to Active vs Passive. Its been a long time since college lit classes, so I did a bit of research, and I don't find any examples of passive voice in my writing. I think she was simply telling me to re-word things to keep the readers interest.
Do you have any suggestions to writers on sentence structure to keep a readers interest/keep the pace moving quickly?

Michelle | 28 June 2010 16:25

tweeted three more times: feed://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/44269055.rss

blogged twice: http://www.blog.michellelbrown.com

that brings my total to 27 pts.

Susan Bearman | 28 June 2010 16:45

Here's my new Tweet: http://twitter.com/2KoP/status/17278557719

Thanks. That brings me to 9 pts.

Juanita | 28 June 2010 17:13

This is a fantastic opportunity for writers like me! Here are my entries:

+1 for becoming a new follower of the blog

+3 for being a current follower of twitter:
@writersblocknz

+2 for tweeting about the contest:
I retweeted about the contest and tweeted about my blog mentioning the contest - https://twitter.com/WritersBlockNZ

+5 for blogging about the contest
http://bit.ly/c8XEqF

+1 for asking a question about writing/editing, or something else I can blog about that I haven't covered already:
Do you know of any exercises/activities writers can do to shake the dreaded writer's block?

I think that's twelve entries if my question is about something that hasn't been covered. I'm crossing my fingers and my toes here...

Michelle | 28 June 2010 17:18

whoops! I re-read prev. post and realized I'd already counted one blog post. Here is the actual link to the most recent post: http://www.michellelbrown.com/blog/?p=100

Is that rss feed sufficient for tweets? I'm too new to twitter to know how to give a more specific link.

So my total would be 22 pts.

Will the winner be for point total or is the number how many entries we receive in a random drawing?

Thanks again!

C.A. Marshall | 28 June 2010 17:26

Michelle, winner wins by random drawing--however many points you have is how many entries I'll put in.

Also, to get a link for a specific tweet, click on the time stamp under your tweet and it'll take you to a page with just that tweet on it. Copy that web address.

Michelle Sussman | 28 June 2010 18:44

Okay, here goes...

+3 - current follower of blog
+3 - current follower on Twitter
+6 - three tweets:

I'm a new follower of the blog. I follow you on twitter and I tweeted the contest.

http://rayden-jay.livejournal.com/ | 29 June 2010 15:36

My update:

3 - Current blog follower
3 - Current twitter follower
2 - I'll put a note somewhere to remind me to tweet about the contest daily (I'm creating a hash for this, hope it works #camarshallcontest)
5 - Blog daily. This is actually the perfect time for me to blog about my take on Fifa 2010 and the games (It's ridiculous how into Fifa I am.) http://rayden-jay.livejournal.com/17224.html

Sorry, above post is mine.

I joined as a follower so that's a +1. I also posted a link on the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award forum http://www.amazon.com/tag/amazon%20breakthrough%20novel%20awards/forum/ref=cm_cd_ecf_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx6TTNZ0V5TDQ5&cdThread=Tx20JE2BW18MK3Q

It's not precisely a blog, but it's a widely read discussion forum. Hopefully that counts as a +5. If it does, that's +6 total.

http://twitter.com/mrswritebrain/status/17376761269

and another tweet https://twitter.com/Vampyr14/status/17434226345 +2

So I think that takes me to 11.

Patty Blount | 30 June 2010 16:18

This is one of the best contests yet. Thanks for thinking of it.

New blog subscriber.
New twitter follower.
Here's a question that confounds me... as a reader, I enjoy when novels include real things like places I haven't visited or details about some hobby I've never tried. Well-researched stories intrigue me but I'm never sure what permissions are needed to do the same in my own writing. For example, is it permissible to name real schools, hospitals, retail establishments that exist in the neighborhood in which my story is set? Take it a step further... a character in my WIP is a Harry Potter fan and named her dog Hagrid. Do I need Rowling's permission to keep this in my book? Realism is great, but not if it gets me sued!

Great idea, Cassandra!

Margo Gremmler | 30 June 2010 16:33

I just couldn't wait, Cassandra. Just blogged about your giveaway here:
http://bit.ly/aRTbXF

So, that's:
+1 for following on Twitter
+1 for following blog (via Google FriendConnect
+2 for direct retweet today (sorry, timestamp links to your original tweet :)
+5 for today's blog post

Blog idea: I'd like to ask aspiring writers who they believe their literary doppelganger is. I know it's not editing-related, but how fun would that be?
Someone said I look like Laurie Halse Anderson recently, which flattered me to no end.
(So, you know, +1 if you dig that.)

Thanks again, Cassandra!

Susan | 30 June 2010 16:47

+3 for being a current Twitter follower
+1 for being new follower of blog
+2 for retweet today (on http://twitter.com/glossingoverit)
+1 for question
=Total 7

My question is: Is it possible to over-edit and incorporate too much feedback? Since I think the answer is yes, how do you know when you're really done?

Margo Berendsen | 30 June 2010 18:32

+1 for becoming a new follower of the blog
+1 for becoming a new follower of my twitter
+2 for tweet http://twitter.com/writerWyoming
+1 for asking a question

Total: 5

Can you switch between 1st and 3rd person if you have to main characters in MG and YA?

Elizabeth Ryann | 30 June 2010 18:55

Okay, exciting stuff! I am both a new blog and twitter follower, but I did tweet about your contest: http://twitter.com/ElizabethRyann/status/17447418316

It is a very exciting tweet, too, full of positivity and sharing. :)

Andrea Mack | 1 July 2010 06:28

I'm becoming a new follower - your blog looks interesting!

+1

Kate Larkindale | 1 July 2010 15:00

Okay... Had 11
add one tweet: http://twitter.com/Vampyr14/status/17513685381

And one blog mention http://katelarkindale.blogspot.com/2010/07/selction.html

And here's my question: Can you destroy good work by over editing?

So let's add 7 points, to bring me to a total of 18.

Which is probably not enough to win, but I gave it my best shot. All I can do!

Margo Gremmler | 1 July 2010 17:37

Hi Cassandra,
Just tweeted again today:
http://twitter.com/margogremmler/statuses/17522102306

Okay... I retweeted, I twit-follow and became a blog follower! I think I at least got some points! Does begging count for something? I'd send some bribes, but my cookies end up looking and tasting like hockey pucks.

Shannon | 1 July 2010 19:22

Yay for a great contest with impeccable timing!

1+ New blog Follower
1+ New twitter follower
2+ Re-tweeting
5+ For a blog Post and here is my link to double check it, http://shannonmayer.blogspot.com

1+ for a question for a total of 10 and my question is, How do you know the editor you've hired has done a good job? For example, I've hired an editor who at first I thought was doing great, then realized that she wasn't doing much more than one of my first readers have. Is this normal or am I just being cynical? Thanks and looking forward to your thoughts on this :)

Misty | 1 July 2010 21:23

Hey doll,
+1 New to the blog
+3 I've always been yours, Tweet Mate
+2 I'm running off to tweet and retweet you when finished here @mistyprovencher
+1 I've got a question
Total: 7
The question is: How much do you interject in editing? Are your suggestions broad, like 'make the ending stronger' or do you focus on grammar? Do you comb over a manuscript only once or do you have to go through several times?
Uh oh. Can I ask more than one question? Hehehe.

Kathleen L. Maher | 1 July 2010 21:29

I am a current follower on twitter, and I retweeted your contest post. I just signed up for your blog, and I also posted on FB to spread the news about this awesome contest.
I have a writing question. Are the days of historical sagas like John Jakes' done and over with? Is it possible to have a series of historical novels where a few of them are romances, and the rest are straight historical?
With my question, I believe that gives me six entries.
Thanks, and congrats on your following and on your wonderful review.

A (long) question: +1

I took 8 months querying my last novel due to a few requested exclusives. I recently discovered a couple agents who I think would be a good fit and sent them my query about a month ago. Problem? I'm nearly done with my next novel and would love to query them on that too. Will querying them so close together on two different projects spook them? I didn't rush this novel (and I don't want them to think I did) it's just a timing issue.

This leaves me with a total of 19 entries!!! Keeping my fingers crossed. :-)

Thanks!!!!
